Dear Fourth Wing Fans, Please Let Rebecca Yarros Cook

Why We Need To Loosen Our Grip On Casting Expectations

If there’s one thing the book community loves almost as much as dragons, it’s a fan cast.

Spend five minutes on BookTok and you’ll find hundreds of videos confidently declaring that this actor simply has to play Xaden. Another insists Violet can only be portrayed by one specific actress. Someone else has already decided the entire adaptation is ruined because an actor is half an inch too tall.

Friends…

The cast hasn’t even been announced yet.

And we’re already planning the funeral.

The Problem With Dream Casting

Dream casts are fun.

They’re part of fandom culture.

There’s nothing wrong with imagining who could bring your favorite characters to life.

The problem starts when those imagined actors stop being suggestions and become expectations.

Somewhere along the way, fans begin treating their favorite fan cast as if Rebecca Yarros herself personally approved it.

Then, when the official casting inevitably differs?

Out come the petitions.

The angry TikToks.

The declarations that “Hollywood doesn’t understand the books.”

All before anyone has seen a single performance.

@listenwithbritt

Bodhi and Sonya instead maybe? All in all, this is not confirmed 😥 #booktok #fourthwing #xaden #xadencast

Here’s the Thing…

Books and television are different mediums.

A novel asks you to imagine a character.

A television adaptation asks an actor to become that character.

Those aren’t the same thing.

The perfect adaptation isn’t the one where every actor matches the fan art down to the exact eye color.

It’s the one where, five minutes into watching, you forget you’re looking at an actor at all.

You just see Violet.

You just see Xaden.

That’s the magic.

Let’s play a little game.

Imagine if Netflix had treated every physical description in Julia Quinn’s books as an unbreakable rule.

Would we have ever gotten Regé-Jean Page as Simon Basset?

Probably not.

And honestly?

What a tragedy that would have been.

Regé-Jean Page didn’t just play the Duke of Hastings.

He became the Duke of Hastings.

His chemistry, confidence, vulnerability, and charisma turned Simon into one of television’s most memorable romantic leads.

The same can be said for Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma.

Was she exactly how every reader pictured Kate while reading?

No.

Did she absolutely own that role and become the definitive Kate for millions of viewers?

Without question.

In hindsight, it’s almost impossible to imagine anyone else.

And that’s exactly the point.

The best casting choices often aren’t the ones fans expected.

They’re the ones that make us forget we ever imagined someone different.

Rebecca Yarros Understands These Characters Better Than We Do

Here’s the part many fans seem to forget.

Rebecca Yarros isn’t sitting on the sidelines watching someone else adapt her work.

She’s actively involved.

No one understands Violet’s quiet resilience better than Rebecca.

No one knows the balance of danger and tenderness that makes Xaden work better than Rebecca.

No one has spent years living inside these characters’ heads the way she has.

So if she signs off on an actor who wasn’t your personal fan cast…

Maybe, just maybe, she sees something you don’t.

Maybe she watched an audition that captured Violet’s determination.

Maybe she saw the exact emotional range Xaden needs.

Maybe the chemistry between two actors was so undeniable that it outweighed whether they matched every detail readers imagined.

That’s something no fan edit on TikTok can predict.

Performance Beats Appearance Every Time

Let’s be honest.

The internet has a habit of reducing actors to checklists.

Height.

Hair color.

Jawline.

Eye color.

Tattoo placement.

But those things aren’t what made us fall in love with these characters.

We fell in love with Violet because she’s resilient.

We fell in love with Xaden because beneath all that confidence is someone carrying impossible burdens.

Those qualities can’t be measured with a ruler or compared against AI-generated fan art.

They’re revealed in performance.

For the Love of the Dragons…

When the casting announcements finally arrive, it’s okay if your first reaction is surprise.

It’s okay if the actors don’t match the image you’ve carried around since you finished Fourth Wing.

Just don’t mistake different for wrong.

Because history has shown us something over and over again:

Some of the greatest casting decisions were the ones fans never would have made themselves.

So before declaring that the Empyrean adaptation is ruined…

Watch the trailer.

Give the actors a chance.

Trust the auditions.

And maybe, just maybe, trust Rebecca Yarros.

After all…

She created the riders we fell in love with in the first place.

She deserves the chance to introduce them to the rest of the world.
